About Adult Fitness

Cardio Equipment, Cybex and Free Weight Orientations
The YMCA offers resistance training orientations (Cybex VR2, Free-weight and cardio-equipment) to members. Knowledgeable staff will teach you proper exercise form and progression, the keys to your overall fitness and health results. See the front desk for an appointment. Free to members.

Health/Fitness Assessments and Counseling
Our Fitness Assessment and Counseling will help you clarify your goals, teach you the basics of effective exercise progression and guide you toward successful health & fitness achievements. A realistic plan is essential to your success and we are here to help you maximize your potential. This appointment will include: Body Fat Composition, Sub-Max Cardiovascular, Muscular Endurance, and Flexibility. Free to members.

The Total Health Assessment & Profile includes your Body vs. Chronological Age, Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Stress, and Depression Risk, general Nutritional status, Prevention behaviors and Safety. Knowledge is Power. Know where you stand! Total Health Profile: $15

First Step: A Systematic 12-week Program to Better Fitness
Our First Step program will provide you with a supportive and understanding exercise environment as you begin your quest for greater health and physical fitness. This 12-Week First Step program focuses on individual attention with progressive results. A certified fitness counselor will provide education and direction as you progress toward your fitness goals. Our commitment to you: A safe, fun and fitness-building program based on your needs, time availability and desire. Let us motivate and support your efforts in becoming as fit as you choose to be! Free to members.

Personal Training
Take advantage of the opportunity to work one-on-one with a certified personal trainer. Your trainer will help you develop a results- based program designed to fit your goals and time schedule. You will be instructed on proper technique and form, as well as encouraged, challenged, and motivated! A personal trainer can help people of all ages and fitness levels achieve their goals. If you are brand new to exercising it is recommended that you begin with a minimum of 3 sessions to ensure your familiarity with proper training techniques. Each session is 1 hour long. The Montecito Family YMCA recognizes only staff members trained and employed by the YMCA as personal trainers.

Mind Body Flexibilty - All Levels
Explore Body, Mind & Spirit in this unique class where you blend breath, posture, flexibility, strength and mindful focus. Combine Alexander, Feldenkrais, Pilates and Yoga techniques as you evolve at your own pace and comfort zone.

Karate - All Levels
Karate offers a challenging approach to health and well being with the benefit of physical conditioning, strength, flexibility and balance. Shito-Ryu, the style of karate taught at the YMCA, is a traditional Japanese style of karate. Students from beginning through advanced levels can join on-going classes in an atmosphere of peace and friendship. Our classes stress a non-violent approach to karate where one can learn self-defense, get a rigorous workout and gain the self-confidence that enables you to avoid conflict and injury.

NIA - All Levels
(Neuromuscular Integrative Action) NIA is an expressive fitness and awareness movement program. It offers an experience that embraces individual creativity, self-inquiry and free expression.

Tai Chi - All Levels
Tai Chi incorporates flowing slow motion movements and breathing to increase your mental and physical health, and calm your spirit.


PILATES & YOGA

Mat Pilates - All Levels
This mat science class uses Thera-bands, balls and a variety of other devices and techniques to increase an individual’s muscle strength and endurance, core body strength and balance. The Mat Pilates system of conditioning is perfect for individuals who are complementing their fitness training program, nursing minor injuries or trying to gain balance in their lives.

Gentle Yoga - All Levels
This Hatha Yoga class will allow you to shift out of the stress of daily living
and ease into a more peaceful you. It includes a super deep relaxation!

Yoga I - III
Designed for beginning to advanced Yoga participants who crave feedback on form, function and techniques. Enjoy improved physical health, greater flexibility, and relief from stress and tension in this Hatha Yoga taught by certified staff. You will develop increased energy and vitality and a more relaxed outlook on life.


ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS

Fit For Life - Levels 1 & 2
This is an enjoyable safe exercise program for active older adults who want a less strenuous but still challenging workout. Specific goals are to maintain or improve endurance, strength, flexibility and balance through a variety of activities and exercises. These include working with weights, bands, and floor work. An emphasis is given to working with the stability ball.

New Beginnings - Level 1
This class provides accommodations for individual limitations through a variety of exercises performed standing or in a chair. The goal is to provide participants an opportunity to build endurance, strength, flexibility and balance through a series of exercises according to each individual’s ability, using weights, bands and small balls.

Senior Fit - Levels 1 & 2
Join new friends for a wonderful 60- minute workout. This class includes aerobic activity while moving to the oldies, muscle conditioning with weights and flexibility while relaxing.


WATER PROGRAM

Water Aerobics - All Levels
Exercise to lively, upbeat music in a social environment. The natural resistance of the water, plus additional water equipment helps develop muscle tone, strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, with reduced stress on bones and joints.


Specialty Classes

Well Being! Cancer Wellness Program
Well Being! is an inspiring 10-week cancer wellness program designed to assist in the quality, comfort and ease of the recovery process. Participants benefit by improving muscular strength, endurance and flexibility, posture, aerobic fitness, bone density, energy level, stress control and quality of life.*

Healthy Back
Our Healthy Back class is a three-week course in back pain prevention and management. In this course, offered four times per year, you’ll learn how to protect and overcome back pain with a gentle series of exercises, which can be easily continued at home. Included in this course is a copy of the highly acclaimed YMCA Healthy Back Book for your reference library!

Get Real ~ Weight Management Class
If you’re ready to take control of your weight and want the guidance and motivation to help you along, this program is for you! This six-week course includes nutritional guidance, an exercise program, and fun interactive weekly sessions. Let our Get Real weight management program help you make all your health and fitness goals come true!


ADULT SPECIAL INTERESTS

CPR
This American Heart Association course covers rescue breathing and one-person CPR, risk factors for heart disease, prudent heart living, signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest, and emergency situations.

AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
This American Heart Association course teaches how to identify a cardiac arrest victim and the basic technique of adult CPR and use of an AED. You will also learn about using barrier devices and giving first aid for a choking victim. Because of the AED effectiveness, ease of use and care, they are now being placed in public buildings, worksites and even homes. Participants must have a CPR certification to register for this class.

Lifeguard Certification
The Montecito YMCA holds a lifeguard certification course twice a year. This 32-hour course includes lifeguard book and certification card. For more information contact Karen Chandler.

All CPR and First Aid classes are held at the Montecito Family YMCA. See program flyers for cost and additional information. Minimum age: 14 years. If under the age of 18, must have written permission from Parents or Guardian for all classes.
