Sorona Smart Dodd helped create Father’s Day at the YMCA in Spokane, WA

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers who inspire our youth every day! This weekend we celebrate the male role models and father figures who are dedicated to their children’s lives through care, teaching, and encouragement.

Did you know that Father’s Day was started at the YMCA?

At the YMCA in Spokane, WA, after listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day in 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd told her pastor that there should be a similar day for fathers. Sonora’s own father, William Jackson Smart, raised Sonora and five other children on his own!

In order to have enough time to prepare a sermon, Sonora and the pastors decided to celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. Nixon recognized Father’s Day as a National Holiday in 1972.

What can you do this Father’s Day?

The YMCA is open this Sunday for Father’s Day and we have plenty of resources available for fathers to take care of themselves with some healthy fun!
