Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers who inspire our youth every day! This weekend we celebrate the male role models and father figures who are dedicated to their children’s lives through care, teaching, and encouragement.
Did you know that Father’s Day was started at the YMCA?
At the YMCA in Spokane, WA, after listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day in 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd told her pastor that there should be a similar day for fathers. Sonora’s own father, William Jackson Smart, raised Sonora and five other children on his own!
In order to have enough time to prepare a sermon, Sonora and the pastors decided to celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. Nixon recognized Father’s Day as a National Holiday in 1972.
What can you do this Father’s Day?
1. Take a dip in the pool!
The summer sun is bright and hot. This Father’s Day, cool off with a refreshing dip in our pool. The YMCA offers recreational swim. The family can come along, too! Visit your local YMCA’s pool schedule to see our recreational swim hours.
Not sure how to introduce your little, little one to the pool? The YMCA offers Parent-Child Swim classes for parents and children six months to two years. The swim instructor will guide you through each step and you guide your baby through their very first swim lesson!
Take the day to focus on yourself and workout at our facility. If you are a member at the YMCA, but haven’t set up a Y Fit appointment, schedule one at your YMCA. Download a guest pass at your local YMCA’s website if you aren’t a member already.
3. Bond with Dad in a Group Exercise Class
Take your dad to the YMCA and spend Father’s Day together in one of our group exercise classes. A workout is much more fun when there’s a friend by your side. Check out your local YMCA’s schedule and download a guest pass at your local YMCA’s website if you aren’t a member already.
We have plenty of Senior Fitness classes available for our seasoned fathers. Enjoy an exercise that will keep you in shape and goes to your pace. Check out your local YMCA’s schedule and learn more about fitness classes you can enjoy.
