Youth & Government at the YMCA

Youth and Government provides outstanding educational and social experiences for your teen. Your teen will build and strengthen positive character traits and life skills. Teens will also strengthen their communities by becoming active and responsible contributors who are inspired to lead and empowered to create meaningful change.

High School students receive a hands-on experience learning about State Government. Teens will have the chance to debate ideas, write a legislative bill, argue court cases, manage a campaign, run for local and statewide offices, and connect with 2,500 California high school students. For five days in Sacramento, students get the rare opportunity to take over the State Capitol and Courts to debate legislation, argue cases and create friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

Participating in Y&G can be a life-changing experience and benefits include:

  • Leadership development
  • Public speaking
  • Research and writing
  • Values and teamwork
  • Study skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Greater understanding of civic engagement
  • Addressing issues on statewide and national levels

Youth & Government meets weekly at the Y to prepare for conferences held in November and January at Camp Roberts and ultimately an exciting trip to the State Capital in Sacramento where participants take the floor!
