As our communities evolve, so does the Y; taking on many of the greatest challenges facing our young people, our health and our community. Some see challenges, yet the Y sees opportunities. Dedicated to delivering lasting personal and social change, we ask the community to come together and help. By donating to the Y, the benefits stay right here in the community we all care so much. A few programs that exist solely through donor support are Third Grade Learn to Swim, LIVESTRONG at the Y and Open Doors.
The YMCA has been America’s leading swim instructor for more than 100 years extending beyond just learning lifesaving swim strokes. Y kids gain self confidence that they carry with them through life. The Y works with schools to give third grade students a chance to learn to swim. Third grade has been shown to be a crucial time in a child’s life and chances of learning to swim and gaining water safety skills after this point in a child’s life diminish rapidly after third grade.
Kids come to the Y sometimes never having been in a pool before, scared of the water and often times from families who can’t afford lessons. The Y partners with schools, to bring third grade classes to the pool to be taught these skills that will last a lifetime.
Third Grade Learn to Swim is completely supported by generous donations. There is no charge to the school or the student.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. In addition to physical benefits, the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.
Through generous donor contributions, the Y offers this 12-week program at no charge to participants.
