Parent and Child Swim Lessons at the YMCA

Experience tells us that babies can and do swim when they are ready. In order to foster a life-long love for the water, it is vital for babies and toddlers to feel that they have choices and that they will be allowed to learn at their own pace. Practicing patience and building trust are the keys to babies swimming successfully. Our parent and child swim lesson gently stretch a child’s comfort level by using songs, games, and the special bond that already exist between parents and their children. This helps to build a child’s confidence and will allow them to feel safe, happy, and secure as they begin to explore a water environment.

Our lessons structure help infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. Parent participation is required in stages A and B.

Stage A
Parents accompany children in Stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

Stage B
In Stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
