The Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA is encouraging all community members to take control of their health and understand the risks for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Only 10 percent of those know they have prediabetes.
To be clear, that means 90 percent of people are not aware their blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that more than one in three Americans (84 million people) has prediabetes.
Making some basic lifestyle changes that contribute to weight loss and healthy living can decrease the risk for type 2 diabetes. At the Y, there are resources like Y Fit goal setting, which is incldued with membership.
Y Fit partners you with a certified trainer to set goals, motivate you to achieve them, and set a plan to make progress last.
Research has shown that modest weight loss and regular, moderate physical activity can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes among adults at risk.
As a leading nonprofit, the YMCA is dedicated to improving the nation’s health and helping those at risk prevent a diabetes diagnosis. Take small steps to improve your health and overall wellbeing at your local Y today.
