Spring Youth Basketball Classes

Our co-ed basketball program is for youth ages 3-14. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the game through practices and game play, participants will learn valuable life skills including teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence.

Coed Youth Basketball

In December 1891, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., the school’s director, Dr. Luther Gulick, gave physical education teacher James Naismith two weeks to come up with an indoor winter game to challenge a class of future Y directors. Naismith hung peach baskets to the bottom of a second-level running track and taught the men his new game: basketball. Today, basketball is second only to soccer as the most popular sport in the world.

The Y is still the starting point for many kids to learn this fast-paced sport brimming with team play and individual skills. Your kids won’t get cut from the team and won’t warm the bench. Our coed basketball leagues are designed to develop fundamental basketball skills while learning teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Skills taught include passing, shooting, dribbling, and the rules of the game. Youth basketball lays the foundation for staying active and developing healthy habits that kids can carry with them throughout their lives. With levels of instruction varying from beginner to competitive leagues, kids get great exercise and learn while doing it. The focus of the league is to have fun, meet new friends and play basketball in a non-competitive environment.

Basketball at the Y offers opportunities for kids to grow physically and mentally while having fun and learning the rules of the game. Our coaches emphasize character development and teamwork. Every kid gets a chance to play the game.
