As our communities evolve, so does the Y; taking on many of the greatest challenges facing our young people, our health and our community. Some see challenges, yet the Y sees opportunities. Dedicated to delivering lasting personal and social change, we ask the community to come together and help. By donating to the Y, the benefits stay right here in the community we all care so much. A few programs that exist solely through donor support are Third Grade Learn to Swim, LIVESTRONG at the Y and Open Doors.
Third Grade Learn to Swim
The YMCA has been America’s leading swim instructor for more than 100 years extending beyond just learning lifesaving swim strokes. At the Y, kids gain self-confidence that they carry with them through life. Research has shown this to be a crucial time in a child’s life and chances of learning to swim and gaining water safety skills, and after this point in a child’s life learning to swim diminish rapidly after third grade. The Y works with elementary schools across Ventura to give third-grade students a chance to learn to swim. Third Grade Learn to Swim is completely supported by generous donations. There is no charge to the school or the student.

Open Doors Scholarship
Our signature Financial Assistance program helps the Y to keep our promise to strengthen the community – the whole community. Every day we work to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at the Y. Financial assistance is available to help pay for facility memberships, activities, camp, and child care.
One of the most complex challenges our community faces is homelessness and one of the most heartbreaking aspects of being homeless is the children who are affected by it. The Y started Operation ventura to provide any child, who is homeless, foster, or in transitional living the opportunity to participate in Y programs for free.
All Ys strive to ensure access, inclusion and engagement for all segments of society so our community feels welcome as participants, members, staff and volunteers. In response to our ever-evolving community demographics, ESL classes were added to ensure that everyone has the ability to learn English for personal empowerment to engage and connect in our community. ESL classes are free and participants are encouraged to bring their families so they have a support group as they learn a new language.
