Black History Month

During Black History Month, we honor the YMCA’s longstanding role as a pillar of support for Black communities and celebrate the Black leaders throughout history who have advanced belonging, equity, and inclusion. From the first YMCA founded by Anthony Bowen, a formerly enslaved man, to the origins of Black History Month inspired by Dr. Carter G. Woodson at a YMCA on Chicago’s South Side, the YMCA has long served as a place where people connect, share ideas, and grow together. While we acknowledge that there is still important work ahead, this Black History Month reminds us that, together, we can continue to strengthen, support, and uplift communities across the nation.
