Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA introduced group swim lessons more than 100 years ago, and each year, the YMCA teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills. Lessons are not just for kids—the Y teaches people of all ages how to swim.

 

Group Swim Lessons

Group swim lessons at the YMCA are specifically tailored to the participant's age, swimming ability, level of physical development, and confidence in the water. Swim Team

Joining the Swim Team at the YMCA helps kids build endurance, speed, and drill techniques, with a healthy dose of teamwork and sportsmanship. Our trained swim coaches work with every child to improve swim skills for this competitive program. YMCA swim teams are designed to help team members improve and refine strokes, starts, turns, and finishes.

Parent & Child Lessons

Parents and babies or toddlers ages 6 – 36 months play games that introduce fundamental water skills such as blowing bubbles, breathing control, kicking, and floating. The class focuses on water orientation and encourages parents and babies to trust each other in the water.

Adaptive Lessons

For youth with special needs, we have created Adaptive Swim Lessons. These lessons are set during a quieter time of day at the pool to help reduce distractions and overstimulation. In small groups, swimmers are taught the fundamentals of swimming, while focusing on water safety. Classes are structured to help create a safe and fun environment.

Teen & Adult Swim Lessons

Swim lessons at the Y will help you feel confident and comfortable around the water, as well as enjoy a great mode of exercise. Adult lessons follow the same swim lesson structure as with our younger students with a clear progression track based upon age and ability. No matter the age, we have swim lessons that will work for you.

Private Swim Lessons

Knowing how to swim and be safe around water is an essential skill, but for some, it’s not easy. To someone unfamiliar with the water, going to the beach or a pool can be an uncomfortable, stressful, or embarrassing experience, but it doesn’t have to be. The Y provides more one on one attention with private swim lessons, for those who need to move at their own pace.
