Lompoc Unified School District will continue its long-running partnership with the YMCA for after-school care, while also expanding services through the Boys & Girls Club, following board approval at its most recent meeting.
The decision comes after uncertainty and concern from families, many of whom rallied in support of the YMCA’s 40-year role in local aftercare.
Earlier this year, the district issued a request for proposals (RFP) for its ELOP-funded Learning Enrichment Opportunities (LEO) program — a move that signaled the possible end of its contract with the Y.
That possibility triggered strong public response at two school board meetings in June.
While district officials never formally announced plans to end the YMCA contract, the competitive bidding process and lack of clear communication led to community concerns.
The board ultimately voted to maintain YMCA services at eight school sites — Buena Vista, Crestview, Los Berros, La Cañada, Clarence Ruth, La Honda, Miguelito, and all secondary schools — while assigning Fillmore and Hapgood Elementary Schools to the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County.
Programs are funded through California’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP), which supports before-school, after-school, intersession, and summer enrichment for TK–12 students.
