Our swim lessons are about more than just the techniques and skills. They are about nurturing swimming skills, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. When it comes to swimming and water safety, no one is trusted more than the YMCA, America’s Swim Instructor. In fact, group swim instruction was developed by the YMCA in 1906.

Every day, two children die as a result of drowning. In fact, drowning is the second‑leading cause of death for children between the ages of 5 and 14. The Y is committed to making a difference in this statistics by making sure everyone has the opportunity to develop life-saving skills needed to be safe in and around the water. Our water safety programs and partnerships make water safety exciting, fun and accessible.

In 2017, Ys across the nation launched a new Swim Lesson structure that ensures the same high-quality experience at every YMCA throughout the country. Utilizing a clear progression track based on age and ability, participants build confidence to reach swimming skill milestones. As drowning is a leading cause of death among children and adults, all lessons emphasize personal safety around water.
